Defensive tail displays in dice snakes (Natrix tessellata) are influenced by colour morph and sex

چکیده

Abstract Defensive tail displays are common in squamates; however, the factors underlying occurrence of such rarely studied. We tested 268 adult dice snakes ( Natrix tessellata ) a population with three colour morphs, exploring effects morph, sex, body size, length and temperature on waving two stages antipredator response. When captured, blotched morph waved most, followed by melanistic then green morphs. Males displayed during post-capture immobility more often than females, possibly due to sexual dimorphism and/or fleeing speed. The was low response researcher as “predator” (∼2.6% capture; ∼6.8% immobility), however this behaviour encounters real predators might be different. Large sample size is crucial for revealing fine scale rare behaviours waving.

Hypernatremia in Dice Snakes (Natrix tessellata) from a Coastal Population: Implications for Osmoregulation in Marine Snake Prototypes

The widespread relationship between salt excreting structures (e.g., salt glands) and marine life strongly suggests that the ability to regulate salt balance has been crucial during the transition to marine life in tetrapods. Elevated natremia (plasma sodium) recorded in several marine snakes species suggests that the development of a tolerance toward hypernatremia, in addition to salt gland de...

Study of Blood Parasites of the Three Snake Species in Iran: Natrix natrix, Natrix tessellata and Zamenis longissimus (Colubridae)

Infections with blood parasites are common phenomenon in reptiles from all over the world. Apicomplexan are the majority of blood parasites that frequently occur with high levels of parasitaemia in the snakes. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of blood parasites in some snakes Guilan province in the North of Iran. A total of 51 specimens of three snake species were captured in...

Odour-Mediated Orientation of Beetles Is Influenced by Age, Sex and Morph

The behaviour of insects is dictated by a combination of factors and may vary considerably between individuals, but small insects are often considered en masse and thus these differences can be overlooked. For example, the cowpea bruchid Callosobruchus maculatus F. exists naturally in two adult forms: the active (flight) form for dispersal, and the inactive (flightless), more fecund but shorter...

Comparative morphology of the skin of Natrix tessellata (family: Colubridae) and Cerastes vipera (family: Viperidae).

We studied beneficial difference of the skin of two snakes. Two snakes were chosen from two different habitats and two families: Colubridae (Natrix tessellata) and Viperidae (Cerastes vipera). The investigations were performed by light and electron microscopy. Histologically, the skin of the studied species show pronounced modifications that correlated with functional demands. The scales in Nat...
